CAROLEE  SCHNEEMANN

èlan vital

Carolee Schneemann's video exhibition, a study-case presenting a body of performance-art works spanning the tumultuous, exciting years between 1963 and 1974 where an extraordinarily talented young woman, beautiful painter, breaks new radical feminist and political frontiers. “A painter who has left the canvas to activate actual space and lived time'' weaving the mediums of film, performance and installation art, all the while, remaining informed by Abstract Expressionist premises of Stream of Consciousness, claims “All my work evolves from my history as a painter: all the objects, installations, film, video performance things that are formed“. But the performative works which are one aspect of this larger body of work are all that the culture can hold onto. That fascination overrides the rest of the work. But it still invokes a mind/body split. If you are going to represent physicality and carnality, we cannot give you intellectual authority". In light of the early ‘Happening’artists, who rephrased painting into live action, Carolee Schneemann, employed her body as a component of her own autobiographical work, all the while developing and extending visual principles off the canvas.
